چکیده

The Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) specialises in the production and analysis of longitudinal data. ISER incorporates the following centres: • ESRC Research Centre on Micro-social Change. Established in 1989 to identify, explain, model and forecast social change in Britain at the individual and household level, the Centre specialises in research using longitudinal data. • ESRC UK Longitudinal Centre. This national resource centre was established in October 1999 to promote the use of longitudinal data and to develop a strategy for the future of large-scale longitudinal surveys. It was responsible for the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and for the ESRC's interest in the National Child Development Study and the 1970 British Cohort Study • European Centre for Analysis in the Social Sciences. ECASS is an interdisciplinary research centre which hosts major research programmes and helps researchers from the EU gain access to longitudinal data and cross-national datasets from all over Europe. The British Household Panel Survey is one of the main instruments for measuring social change in Britain. The BHPS comprises a nationally representative sample of around 5,500 households and over 10,000 individuals who are reinterviewed each year. The questionnaire includes a constant core of items accompanied by a variable component in order to provide for the collection of initial conditions data and to allow for the subsequent inclusion of emerging research and policy concerns. Among the main projects in ISER's research programme are: the labour market and the division of domestic responsibilities; changes in families and households; modelling households' labour force behaviour; wealth, well-being and socioeconomic structure; resource distribution in the household; and modelling techniques and survey methodology. BHPS data provide the academic community, policymakers and private sector with a unique national resource and allow for comparative research with similar studies in Europe, the United States and Canada. BHPS data are available from the Data Archive at the University of Essex Further information about the BHPS and other longitudinal surveys can be obtained by telephoning +44 (0) 1206 873543. Estimation of Poverty Transition Matrices with Noisy Data

This paper investigates potential measurement error biases in poverty transition matrices. We compare transition matrices based on survey consumption data to measurement-error-free simulated consumption, which is built on initial conditions and parameters estimated from a basic consumption dynamics model allowing for measurement error. We …nd that measurement error in consumption data magni…es ...

- 1 - Poverty traps and Nonlinear Income Dynamics with Measurement Error and Individual Heterogeneity

Theories of poverty traps stand in sharp contrast to the view that anybody can make it through hard work and thrift. However, empirical detection of poverty traps is complicated by the lack of long panels, measurement error, and attrition. This paper shows how dynamic pseudo-panel methods can overcome these difficulties, allowing estimation of non-linear income dynamics and testing of the prese...

Poverty traps and nonlinear income dynamics with measurement error and individual heterogeneity

Theories of poverty traps stand in sharp contrast to the view that anybody can make it through hard work and thrift. However, empirical detection of poverty traps is complicated by the lack of long panels, measurement error and attrition. This paper shows how dynamic pseudopanel methods can overcome these difficulties, allowing estimation of nonlinear income dynamics and testing of the presence...

Improvement of position measurement for 6R robot using magnetic encoder AS5045

Recording the variation of joint angles as a feedback to the control unit is frequent in articulated arms. In this paper, magnetic sensor AS5045, which is a contactless encoder, is employed to measure joint angles of 6R robot and the performance of that is examined. The sensor has a low volume, two digital outputs and provides a high resolution measurement for users; furthermore its zero positi...

Does poverty entrap?

We test whether income dynamics over 30 years in rural Indian villages suggest the presence of a poverty trap. A weighted dynamic panel estimate using rainfall as an instrument for lagged income addresses measurement error, attrition bias, and the inherent endogeneity of lagged income while allowing the steady state of income to vary across individuals. Estimates of the model provide robust evi...

Poverty Dynamics: Measurement and Understanding from an Interdisciplinary Perspective

This paper introduces a significant new multi-disciplinary collection of studies of poverty dynamics, presenting the reader with the latest thinking by a group of researchers who are leaders in their respective disciplines. It argues that there are three main fronts on which progress must be made if we are to dramatically deepen the understanding of why poverty occurs, and significantly improve...
